If your question isn’t covered here, please contact us at support@onebigcircle.co.uk

What is AIVR, and how does it work?

AIVR (Automated Intelligent Video Review) is an end-to-end technology suite for capturing, storing, and analysing video and imagery from the railway environment. It includes specialist cameras (both permanent and deployable), a secure cloud platform for storage, and interactive online dashboards. Powerful machine learning and AI tools are applied to the data, automatically detecting assets, their condition, and flagging issues for review.

What kind of video and data solutions do you provide?

We capture a wide variety of video data across the rail network, including forward-facing footage, lineside and structural inspections, line-scanning for plain track, S&C (switches and crossings) and conductor rail, track geometry data, overhead line and pantograph video, thermal imaging, and vehicle inspection. We can also integrate with existing CCTV systems.

How is your technology used in the rail industry?

AIVR is used across the industry for inspections, maintenance, surveys, signal sighting, planning, driver training, and more. Its applications are vast, supporting safer, more efficient, and data-driven work on and around the railway.

Do I need to install any software or special equipment to use AIVR?

No specialist installation is required; AIVR is fully web-based and works with up-to-date browsers. All you will need is a modern web browser and an internet connection. To watch HD video you will need broadband internet with sufficient bandwidth for streaming, although there are low-bandwidth and image-based options within AIVR if you experience issues with buffering. AIVR is available for mobile devices with a smaller set of features. For full details, please see find the article on compatibility.

Can AIVR integrate with other data or management systems?

Yes, AIVR can export data and features integration with third-party rail management, maintenance, and asset systems via APIs. Please contact us to discuss your specific integration needs at enquiries@onebigcircle.co.uk

Which browsers and devices does AIVR Support?

AIVR supports all modern browsers, including Chrome, Edge, Safari, and Firefox – on both Windows and macOS computers. While AIVR is primarily designed for desktop and laptop use, you can also access it on tablets and smartphones; however, some advanced features may be unavailable or have limited functionality on mobile devices. For the best experience and access to the full range of AIVR features, we recommend using a desktop or laptop.

  • Try ‘Low Bandwidth’ mode or ‘Still Images’ in AIVR if video playback is poor.
  • Try a different web browser.
  • If issues persist, contact support@onebigcircle.co.uk
Is there a demo or trial available?

Yes! We offer demos and trial access for eligible users and organisations. Email enquiries@onebigcircle.co.uk to arrange a demo or discuss trial options.

How much does a licence to AIVR cost?

Licensing is tailored depending on required features, volume of licenses, and data access on the AIVR Platform. Email enquiries@onebigcircle.co.uk for a quote.

How do I view other camera angles or travel directions for a location?

In the “History” tab (bottom-right of the app), you can filter footage by camera type and travel direction.

How accurate is the measurement tool?

The accuracy of the measurement tool depends on the accuracy of the calibration. The better the calibration on the screen to the rails and the vanishing point, the more accurate the calibration will be. Please watch our video tutorial on using the measurement tool.

How do I use and calibrate the measurement tool?

Calibration involves aligning the tool’s lines to the rails and vanishing point.
For a full guide, see our help video or contact support for training.

Who can see my annotations and measurements?

You can set each annotation or measurement as ‘public’ (viewable by anyone in your workspace) or ‘private’ (only you can see it).

All of your annotations and measurements on the currently selected session will appear in the ‘Session Content’ tab in the bottom right quarter of the screen. You may also see items here that other users have created. AIVR annotations are not accessible to non-AIVR users or the general public, however, they can be exported and shared offline with colleagues and teammates. Please contact us at support@onebigcircle.co.uk if you would like further information or a refresher on how to make and export annotations.

Can I export data or annotated videos/images?

Yes, AIVR allows export of videos, images, annotations, and reports for sharing and offline use.

How quickly is footage uploaded to the dashboard?

Footage is uploaded to the AIVR Platform in near real-time as the video footage is transmitted from the train via a mobile internet connection. In areas with poor signal, footage may take longer to upload. Please contact us at support@onebigcircle.co.uk if you require additional information.

How much of the railway network do you cover?

We cover over 95% of the network, and the coverage visible to you will depend on your organisation and account settings. The data is collected from a variety of sources including permanently installed cameras onto Network Rail Infrastructure Monitoring trains, temporary deployments of portable camera units and even by cameras deployed to passenger trains. If you require further information about the AIVR coverage map or have further questions about data collection, please email us at support@onebigcircle.co.uk

How is data collected and stored?

Data is captured via AIVR cameras on in-service, maintenance, or monitoring trains, uploaded via 4G/5G, checked for quality, and made available online. All video, images, and metadata are securely stored in the cloud and retrievable for incident review.

What should I do if I can’t find footage for my location?

If you’ve searched for a location and no footage appears, simply click the ‘Enquire about data collection’ prompt. Our team will first check for any technical issues that might be preventing access to existing footage. If no data is currently available, we’ll get in touch to discuss your options – this may include waiting for an upcoming scheduled run or arranging a bespoke survey to capture the footage you need.

Can I get access to more regional data?

Depending on your account licence, you may be able to access more footage from a wider area. You can request access to a larger area by emailing us at support@onebigcircle.co.uk and providing details of the geographical area you want to view.

How often is new data collected and uploaded?

The frequency of data collection and upload depends on the organisation managing the inspection and the specific section of track. For example, if your footage is collected by Network Rail, most mainline tracks are typically surveyed on a four-weekly basis using specialist measurement trains. Higher-risk or higher-traffic track categories may be inspected even more frequently. The collection schedule is closely tied to the track category (TCat), with higher-risk sections being prioritised for more regular monitoring.

Why is some footage backwards-facing?

This occurs when cameras are installed only on one end of a vehicle or the train’s direction differs from the journey. Try using the “History” feature or contact support if you need forward-facing footage.

How do you manage sensitive material in captured footage?

Recordings containing sensitive material are archived during our automated and manual quality assurance processes. Archiving does not completely delete any footage which can subsequently be made available to trusted parties on request.

Who can access the data?

Network Rail data is accessible to authorised Network Rail staff and approved supply chain companies working directly on Network Rail projects. If your organisation is part of the supply chain and involved in a relevant project, you can request access to the necessary data.

Can I collect my own data?

Yes! It’s possible for organisations to collect and access their own project-specific data using AIVR technology, subject to licensing and approval. If you’re interested in deploying AIVR cameras at your site or as part of a specific project, please contact us at enquiries@onebigcircle.co.uk to discuss your requirements. Our team can advise on the best deployment approach to meet your needs and manage the installation, service, and data integration from end to end.

Is the data secure and GDPR-compliant?

Yes. All data is securely stored and managed in line with GDPR and the highest UK rail industry data protection standards. Access is carefully controlled and encrypted.

Does AIVR record personal data?

AIVR is focused on railway infrastructure, not personal data. If personal or sensitive information is inadvertently captured, strict privacy and archiving procedures are followed, including automated people blurring on the AIVR Platform. See our privacy policy for details.

Can AIVR be adapted for custom use cases?

Definitely! We can tailor video technology for a range of applications. If you have a unique requirement, contact enquiries@onebigcircle.co.uk to discuss.
