AIVR Tempus

What is it 

AIVR Tempus is a real-time Tachometer Interface Unit (TIU) developed by One Big Circle as part of the AIVR Focus system. It provides the critical timing control that enables precisely synchronised line‑scanning imagery for rail inspection.

Acting as the bridge between validated train speed signals and imaging equipment, Tempus ensures every frame captured by high-resolution cameras and lighting arrays is triggered at exactly the right moment relative to train movement. This helps create a highly detailed visual record of the UK rail network.

Why it matters

Tempus performs two significant functions:

  1. Coordination of data capture – for line‑scanning to deliver reliable, high‑quality inspection data, all cameras and lighting must trigger at precisely measured intervals based on distance travelled. Even slight timing errors can lead to overlapping or missing imagery, compromising inspection integrity.
  2. Synchronisation of positioning data with data streams from other sensors. This allows users to precisely geolocate any faults detected on the rail network, so trackside engineers can find and fix them.

How it works

AIVR Tempus receives a verified signal from AIVR Pace, AIVR’s Tachometer Distribution Unit (TDU), which consolidates and validates inputs from on-board encoders. AIVR Tempus then uses this signal to orchestrate the triggering of cameras and lighting arrays across the AIVR Focus system. As the train moves, each signal pulse drives coordinated imaging events – capturing every millimetre of rail surface. The synchronised data is then combined through AIVR Connect, which aggregates multiple data streams and uploads them to the AIVR Platform for near real‑time review and analysis.

When it is used

AIVR Tempus entered service alongside the AIVR Focus system in 2021, marking One Big Circle’s first deployment of fully synchronised, distance‑based imaging technology on the UK rail network. Tempus enables Focus to capture imagery every time the train moves just 1mm – whether the train is moving slow or fast. It is used during scheduled inspection runs, high‑speed trials, and targeted maintenance surveys, where accurate positional imaging is essential for assessing asset condition and verifying remedial works.

Who uses it 

The output from AIVR Tempus – AIVR Focus Inspection Imagery – is used by rail infrastructure engineers, inspection teams and technical specialists within Network Rail and contractor organisations. It supports analysts who depend on precise, timestamped imagery for asset management, defect reporting and long‑term maintenance planning.

Where it is used

The system operates across the UK mainline and regional rail networks on vehicles equipped with AIVR Focus and AIVR Connect technology. From high-speed monitoring trains to smaller inspection units, AIVR Tempus ensures that every imaging mission delivers dependable, synchronised data for a safer, more efficient railway.
